Once king Raghu performed a grand Yagna. The ritual of a yagya requires surrender of wealth to the needy. He donated everything he had to the needy. Now an earthen pot to drink water and a small grass carpet were the only belongings he was left with.
When Rishi Kautsa heard of the king’s charity, he went to the king for getting some wealth for his Guru’s Ashram as Guru Dakshina or his contribution.
But, there it was a different situation altogether. The king had donated everything. Having seen the spectacle, sage Kautsa didn’t find it proper to ask anything and in dejection, he decided to leave.
When king Raghu came to know his mind, he went to him and said, “Divine one,You please rest here, soon I will arrange for your Guru’s Ashram.”Kautsa stayed there and king Raghu started praying to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
The Divine mother Lakshmi understood the philanthropic requirement of the king and filled the royal treasury of the king with abundant wealth. The king, then contributed the required sum to Rishi Kautsa.
Moral of the story: The philanthropic acts of devoted people never remain unfulfilled. Divine powers always assist, when there is a need to support for the sake of humanity.
